Summer Home Cleaning Tips for Norfolk and Suffolk Homes
Beverley Holloway · 21 Jul 2026
Summer in East Anglia is something to enjoy. The light lasts longer, the coast is on the doorstep, and there is a genuine sense of the house feeling more alive. But the warmer months also bring their own cleaning challenges: pollen drifting in through open windows, sandy footprints from beach trips, and the kind of humidity that can encourage mildew if you are not careful.
Whether you manage your own routine or rely on our team for regular support, a few simple habits can keep your home feeling genuinely fresh from June through to September.
Let the Season Guide Your Routine
During winter, most of us focus on muddy floors, condensation and heavy fabrics. Summer shifts those priorities. Here is what deserves more attention in the warmer months.
Windows, sills and frames
Open windows are wonderful, but they let in far more than a breeze. Pollen, insects and fine dust all settle on sills and frames. Wipe these down every few days with a damp microfibre cloth. For the glass itself, a solution of warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid, buffed dry with a lint-free cloth, works beautifully without streaking.
Fans and air circulation
If you use a standing or ceiling fan, the blades will collect a surprising amount of dust in a short time. Switch the fan off, then use a pillowcase to slide over each blade and pull it back, trapping the dust inside the case rather than scattering it across the room. Wipe the housing with a lightly damp cloth.
Hard floors and entryways
Sand and grit from gardens, beaches and outdoor spaces are abrasive and work their way into grout lines and wooden floor surfaces quickly. A good doormat at every entrance point, shaken out regularly, makes an enormous difference. Sweep or vacuum hard floors more frequently in summer than you would in winter, and use a well-wrung mop rather than a soaking wet one to avoid warping wooden boards.
Kitchens and Bathrooms in Warmer Weather
Heat and humidity change the way kitchens and bathrooms behave, and both rooms need a little extra attention during summer.
Kitchen hygiene
Food spoils more quickly in warm weather, so the fridge, fruit bowls and worktops all need more frequent attention. Wipe worktops daily with a food-safe antibacterial spray and a clean cloth. Empty and wipe out the fridge shelves every two weeks at most, checking for anything that has gone over. The bin also needs emptying more regularly and, ideally, a rinse with warm soapy water once a week to prevent odours building up.

Bathroom mildew and ventilation
Humidity is higher in summer, and bathrooms can develop mildew around grout, sealant and shower curtains more readily than in other seasons. Run the extractor fan during and after showers, leave the window open where you can, and rinse down tiles after use. A spray of white vinegar diluted in water on grout lines, left for ten minutes then scrubbed with an old toothbrush, removes early mildew before it takes hold.

Pollen, Allergens and Fabrics
East Anglia has significant arable farmland and long grass-growing seasons, which means pollen counts can be high from late spring right through summer. For anyone in the household who has hay fever or allergies, keeping soft furnishings clean is genuinely important.
- Wash bed linen weekly in summer rather than fortnightly, using a warm wash to remove pollen particles.
- Vacuum upholstered sofas and chairs using an upholstery attachment at least once a week.
- Shake and air cushion covers, throws and curtains where possible, ideally early in the morning before pollen counts rise.
- Keep bedroom windows closed during high pollen periods and rely on a fan indoors rather than through-ventilation.
Gardens and Outdoor Spaces Feeding Back Inside
In summer, the line between inside and outside blurs. Patio doors stay open, children run in and out, and garden furniture cushions migrate to the sofa. This is part of what makes the season enjoyable, but it does mean more work for floors, upholstery and entryways.
A quick daily reset
A simple five-minute sweep of the kitchen and main living areas at the end of each day keeps things manageable. Pick up shoes, shake out mats, wipe down the kitchen surface and check the bathroom. It sounds basic, but a short daily habit is far easier than a large weekend rescue job.
Maintaining cleanliness between professional cleans
If you have a regular clean booked, keeping on top of small tasks between visits means our cleaners can focus on the thorough work rather than catching up on surface clutter. Our regular home cleaning service works best when the routine runs alongside your own day-to-day habits.
A One-Off Summer Freshen-Up
Sometimes summer is the prompt to give the whole house a proper going-over, particularly if the Easter clean did not happen or if guests are on the way. A one-off home clean is a straightforward way to get every room back to a standard you are happy with, without committing to an ongoing schedule.
We cover homes across Norfolk and Suffolk, so if you are unsure whether we work in your area, take a look at the locations we cover.
Summer is a season for enjoying your home, not spending every weekend cleaning it. A consistent routine, a bit of extra attention in the right places, and occasional professional support will keep things comfortable without it taking over your time.
